If two communicating entities are in different hosts connected by a network, there is a ris

k that PDUs will not arrive in the order in which they were sent, because they may traverse()paths through the network. If each PDUs is given a unique number, and numbers are assigned(),then it is a logically simple task for the receiving entity to reorder()PDUs on the basis of sequence number. A problem with this scheme is that, with a()sequence number field, sequence number will repeat. Evidently, the maximum sequence number must be()than the maximum number of PDUs that could be outstanding at any time.

Typically, these are concern with the establishment of(66)the network and with the control of the flow of messages across this channel. The provision of such facilities is only part of the network requirements, however, since in many applications the communicating computers may be of different types. This means that they may use different programming languages and, more importantly, different forms of(67)interface between user(application)program, normally referred to, as application processes or APs, and the underlying communication services may be(68)For example, one computer may be a small single -user computer, while another may be a large(69)system. In the earlier days of computer communication, these issues meantthat only closed communities of computers(that is, from the same manufacturer)could communicate with each other in a meaningful way. IBM’s Systems Network.

Architecture (SNA) and DEC's Digital Network Architecture (DNA) are just two examples of Communication software packages produced by manufacturers to allow their systems to be int erconnected together. These proprietary packages, however, of which there am still many inexistence, do not address the problem of universal interconnect ability, or open systems interconnection. In an attempt to alleviate this problem,(70), in the late 1970s, formulated a reference model to provide a common basis (or the coordination of standards developments and to allow existing and evolving standards activities to beplaced into perspective with one another.

第3题
Under normal conditions, the act of communication requires the presence of at least two
persons: one who sends and one who receives the communication. In order to communicate thoughts and feelings, there must be a conventional system of signs or symbols that mean the same to the sender and the receiver.

The means of communication are too numerous and varied for systematic classification; therefore, the analysis must begin with the means of receiving communication. Reception of communication is achieved by our senses. Sight, hearing, and touching seem to play the most important roles. Smell and taste play very limited roles, for they cannot receive intellectual expression from fully developed systems of sings and symbols.

Examples of visual communication are gesture and imitation. Although both frequently accompany speech, there are systems that rely solely on sight, such as those used by deaf, and dumb persons. Another means of communicating visually is by signals of fire, smoke, flags, or flashing light. Feelings may be simply communicated by touch, such as by handshaking or backslapping, although a highly developed system of hand-stroking has enabled blind, deaf, and dumb persons to communicate intelligently. Whistling to someone, applauding in a theater, and other forms of communication by sound rely upon the ear as a receiver. The most fully developed form. of auditory communication is, of course, the spoken language.

The means of communication mentioned so far have two features in common: they last only a short time, and the persons involved must be relatively close to each other. Therefore, all are restricted in time and space.

1、Reception of communication______ .

A、is more important than sending messages

B、 depends on two persons

C、 involves use of the senses

D、 play only limited roles

2、Applauding is specifically mentioned as an example of ______.

A、communication by sound

B、 gesture and imitation

C、 communication by sending a message

D、 communication between the listener and speaker

3、Persons who cannot see, hear, or speak are able to communicate through ______.

A、gesturing

B、handshaking

C、smelling

D、hand-stroking

4、The author specifically mentions that speech is______

A、often used when other means are impossible

B、necessary for normal communication

C、the only highly developed system of communication

D、the most developed form. of communication based on hearing

5、According to the passage, means of communication _________

A、can develop quickly if there is enough time and space

B、all have the same features

C、have some limitations even if they are fully developed

D、depend on the persons involved

Although one might not think so from some of the criticism of it, advertising is essential
to the kind of society in which people in the United Kingdom, and a very considerable proportion of the world at large, live. Advertising is indispensable as a means of communicating with others, of telling them about the goods and services that are provided, and of which most of them would never get to hear at all if it were not for advertising. And advertising is extremely helpful to promote a rising standard of living.

In talking about advertising, one should not think only in terms of a commercial on television, or an advertisement in the newspapers or periodicals. In its widest sense, advertising includes a host of other activities such as packaging, shop displays and—in the sense of communication—even the spoken word of the salesman. After ail, the resources of advertising are to be found in the market place.

For many years it was considered that it was enough to produce goods and supply services. It is only more recently that it has become increasingly understood that the manufacture of goods is a waste of resources unless those goods can be sold at a fair price within a reasonable time span. In the competitive society in which we live, it is important that we go out and sell what we have, and advertising plays an important role in this aspect, whether selling at home or in export markets.

About two percent of the UK gross national product is relied on advertising. But it must not be thought that this advertising tries to sell goods to consumers who do not want them. Certainly, advertising does try to attract the interest of the potential consumer, but if the article when purchased dries not match up to the standards that the advertising suggests that it will, it is obviously exceedingly unlikely that the article will sell well.

According to the text advertising is important to ______.

A.every potential consumer in the world

B.large countries in the world

C.people with a high standard of living

D.a large number of people in the world

Animals other than humans have not developed communications comparable to human langua
ge. But is it possible that other animals have the capacity to learn a language if they are adequately taught? Obviously, this is a fascination notion. The idea of communicating directly with another species has long been a part of human folklore and children’s fantasies. But on a scientific level, the question of whether animals can learn a language is important primarily because it relates to the controversy()between the cognitive and the learning approaches to language. If language is dependent on and is actually an outgrowth of the intellectual structure of the human mind, there is the strong supposition that only humans are capable of using language. Therefore, Noam Chomsky and other psycholinguists have argued that only humans can learn a language, while most behaviorists feel that with sufficient patience it should be possible to teach an animal some sort of language. Although the two schools of thought clearly differ on this point, it is not really a crucial test of the two theories. If a chimpanzee can master a simple language all it would mean is that the chimp’s intellectual capacity and brain structure are more similar to ours than we thought. It would not necessarily imply that our intellectual structure is unimportant in our own mastery of language. Thus, teaching an animal language is an impressive demonstration of the power of learning techniques, but it is not evidence that language is developed entirely through learning. On the other hand, the question of whether other animals can learn a language is fascination in its own right, aside from its value as a test of the two theories of language development. Accordingly, whatever one’s position on the theoretical dispute, we must consider training an animal to use language a dramatic accomplishment.

36.Which of the following statements is the view of psycholinguists?

A. The cognitive view of language learning says that only human beings can learn language because it is an outgrowth of the structure of the human mind.

B. Other animals simply could master a language.

C. The animals intellectual capacity is much better than human beings.

D. Language is developed by learning.

37.The behaviorists’ view is that __________.

A. language is actually an outgrowth of intellectual structure of the animal’s mind

B. animals have not developed communications system

A. human’s intellectual structure is not important

B. animals’ intellectual capacity and brain structure are more similar to the humans’

C. the learning techniques are much more important

D. language is developed completely by learning

39.The main idea of paragraph two is ___________.

A. teaching a chimp language is not crucial test of the two theories

B. their brain structure is not similar to human
