A single status may have multiple roles attached to it, constituting a role set. Consider

the status of a patient in a hospital. The status involves the sick role; another role as the peer of other patients; still another role as the "appreciative" receiver of the gifts and attention of friends and family members; one role as a consumer of newspapers, magazines and other small items purchased from a hospital attendant; and a role as acquaintance of a number of friendly hospital personnel. Or consider your status as a family member. Your status includes a variety of roles, for example, parent and child, uncle, spouse, and cousin. Clearly, a role does not exist in a social vacuum; it is a bundle of activities that are connected with the activities of other people. For this reason there can be no professors without students, no husbands without wives, no whites without nonwhites, and no lawyers without clients.

Roles affect us as sets of norms that define our duties the actions others can legitimately insist that we perform, and our fight the actions we can legitimately insist that others perform. Every role has at least one reciprocal role attached to it; the fights of one role are the duties of the other role. As we have noted, we have a social niche for the sick. Sick people have fights our society says they do not have to function in usual ways until they get well. But sick people also have the duty to get well and "not enjoy themselves too much." The sick role also entails an appeal to another party the physician. The physician must perceive the patient as trying to get well this is the physician’s right and the patient’s duty. And the patient must see the doctor as sincere the patient’s fight and the physician’s duty. It should come as no surprise that the quality of medical care falters when patient and physician role expectations break down.

One way that people are linked in groups is through networks of reciprocal roles. Role relationships tie us to one another because the rights of one end of the relationship are the duties of the other. People experience these stable relationships as social structure a hospital, a college, a family, a gang, an army, and so on.

If your are a patient, you take on all the following roles EXCEPT the role as______.

A.a friend of your fellow patients

B.a staff member of the hospital

C.the receiver of the treatment

D.a buyer of medicines

If two communicating entities are in different hosts connected by a network, there is a ris
k that PDUs will not arrive in the order in which they were sent, because they may traverse()paths through the network. If each PDUs is given a unique number, and numbers are assigned(),then it is a logically simple task for the receiving entity to reorder()PDUs on the basis of sequence number. A problem with this scheme is that, with a()sequence number field, sequence number will repeat. Evidently, the maximum sequence number must be()than the maximum number of PDUs that could be outstanding at any time.

Typically, these are concern with the establishment of(66)the network and with the control of the flow of messages across this channel. The provision of such facilities is only part of the network requirements, however, since in many applications the communicating computers may be of different types. This means that they may use different programming languages and, more importantly, different forms of(67)interface between user(application)program, normally referred to, as application processes or APs, and the underlying communication services may be(68)For example, one computer may be a small single -user computer, while another may be a large(69)system. IBM’s Systems Network.

Architecture (SNA) and DEC's Digital Network Architecture (DNA) are just two examples of Communication software packages produced by manufacturers to allow their systems to be int erconnected together. These proprietary packages, however, of which there am still many inexistence, do not address the problem of universal interconnect ability, or open systems interconnection. In an attempt to alleviate this problem,(70), in the late 1970s, formulated a reference model to provide a common basis (or the coordination of standards developments and to allow existing and evolving standards activities to beplaced into perspective with one another.

●The TCP protocolis a (71) layer protocol. Each connection connects two TCPs that may be just one physical network apart or located on opposite sides ofthe globe. In other words, each connection creates a (72) witha length that may be totally different from another path created by another connection. This means that TCP cannot use the same retransmission time for all connections. Selecting afixed retransnussion time for all connections can result in serious consequences. Ifthe retransmission time does not allow enough time for a (73) to reach the destination and an acknowledgment to reach the source, it can result in retransmission of segments that are still on the way. Conversely, if the retransnussion time is longer than necessary for a short path, it may result in delay for the application programs.

Even for one single connection, the retransmission time should not be fixed.A connection may be able to send segments and receive (74)faster during nontraffic period than during congested periods. TCP uses the dynamic retransmission time,a transmission time is different for each connection and which may be changed during the same connection. Retransmission time can be made(75) by basing it on the round-trip time (RTT). Several formulas are used for this purpose.

●Border Gateway Protocol(BGP) is inter-autonomous system (71) protocol. BGP is based on a routing method called path vector routing. Distance vector routing is not a good candidate for inter-autonomous system routing because there are occasions on which the route with the smallest (72) count is not the preferred route. For example, we may not want a packet through an not secure even though it is the shortest route. Also, distance vector routing is unstable due to the fact that the routers announce only the number of hop counts to the destination without actually defining the path that leads to that (73) .A router that recevives a distance vector advertisement packet may be fooled if the shortest path is actually calculated through the receiving router itself. Link (74) routing is also not a good candidate for inter-autonomous system routing because an Internet is usually too big for this routing method. To use link state routing for the whole internet would require each routex to have a huge link state database. It would also take a long time for each router to calculate its rousting (75) using the Dijkstra algorism.

听力原文: The private motor vehicle has given us a freedom our ancestors could not dream about. We can travel swiftly, and usually safely, over the roads which have been built to accommodate our cars. People can display their wealth by driving a car which may cost as much as another person's home.

(29) Sadly the car has become a disadvantage as well as a boon. The car pollutes the atmosphere, may be involved in serious accidents, and by its very numbers blocks roads. (29) How can we reduce its use? The car is only desirable if we can use it easily, so we might begin by reducing access to parking spaces in the cities and simultaneously increasing the quality and availability of public transport. Cars could be banned from certain parts of the city, thus forcing people to walk or to use public transport. The expense of buying and running a car can be raised. (30) If the motorist is faced with a high purchase price, high road tax, high insurance premiums and substantial fines he or she may reconsider the purchase. A corresponding reduction in the price of public transport would help this financial argument against car ownership.

Neither of these arguments will sway the super rich who can afford the status cars, but it would perhaps encourage them to look at other ways of demon-strafing their wealth. (31) However we do it, reducing the number of cars on the road will reduce the problems of pollution and the congestion which can bring cities to a standstill.

29. What does the speaker focus on?

30.What factor might hinder most people's consideration of purchasing private cars?

31.What would be the result if the number of private cars is reduced?

(4)

A.The sadness of being involved in accidents.

B.Ways to limit the use of private cars.

C.The serious pollution on motor roads.

D.Freedom to travel quickly and safely.

There were two widely divergent influences on the early development of statistical methods
. Statistics had a mother who was dedicated to keeping orderly records of governmental units (state and statistics come from the same Latin root, status) and a gentlemanly gambling father who relied on mathematics to increase his skill at playing the odds in games of chance. The influence of the mother on the offspring, statistics, is represented by counting, measuring, describing, tabulating, ordering, and the taking of censuses—all of which led to modem descriptive statistics. From the influence of the father came modem inferentical statistics, which is based squarely on theories of probability.

Descriptive statistics involves tabulating, depicting, and describing collections of data. These data may be either quantitative, such as measures of height, intelligence, or grade level—variables that are characterized by an underlying continuum or the data may represent qualitative variable, such as sex, college major, or personality type.

Large masses of data must generally undergo a process of summarization or reduction before they are comprehensible. Descriptive statistics is tool for describing or summarizing or reducing to comprehensible form. the properties of an otherwise unwieldy mass of data.

Inferential statistics is a formalized body of methods for solving another class of problems that present great difficulties for the unaided human mind. This general class of problems characteristically involves attempts to make predictions using a sample of observations. For example, a school superintendent wishes to determine the proportion of children in a large school system who come to school without breakfast, have been vaccinated for flu, or whatever. Having a little knowledge of statistics, the superintendent would know that it is unnecessary and inefficient to question each child; the proportion for the entire district could be estimated fairly accurately from a sample of as few as 100 children. Thus, the purpose of inferential statistics is to predict or estimate characteristics of a population from knowledge of the characteristics of only a sample of the population.

Which of the following are counting and describing associated with?

A.Descriptive statistics

B.Unknown variables

C.Qualitative changes

D.Inferential statistics
